She found herself now walking among rolling hills. Small, smooth bumps on an otherwise flat and featureless plain of grass. It was dark out, illuminated only by the full moon in the sky. Internally, she remarked to herself about how bright just the moon was. When she looked up to the sky, she realized just how long it had been since she had been able to see the stars. Living in the city took its toll on her. The constant movement, the noise, the lights; it had become so commonplace that she had forgotten that there was life outside of it. The constant effort to filter it all out drained her energy. She never really understood that idea of being one with the world. She was always an outsider looking in. On the slope of a small hill she decided then to lie down and look up to the sky. As she set herself down, she felt the ground behind her sink slightly, as if it were slightly malleable. A part of her worried that it would sink into the ground, and that it would swallow her whole. It was going to swallow her whole. No it wasn’t. Shaking those thoughts aside she thought instead about how comfortable it would be to be swallowed up by the earth. She was brought out of her stupor by lights suddenly flashing above her. Fireworks went off soundlessly in the sky. The smoke started to obscure the stars and the moon. She watched as sparks fell like technicolor rain.
